Renovation & Centenary

In 2020, the famous architect/designer duo Patrick Jouin and Sanjit Manku embarked on a spectacular renovation of the hotel.

The project was carried out in two phases, culminating in the final touches being made at the end of 2023.

After the renovation of the restaurants, bars and tea houses in 2020, the second phase focused on the public areas, thus completing the magnificent metamorphosis of the Grande Dame on the eve of its centenary. This included the Reception Area, the Mamounia Gallery, the Centenary Chandelier, the VIP Lounge and the Majorelle Bar, Gallery and Esplanade, all of which are now ready to live out the new pages in La Mamounia’s history book for the next hundred years...

The Lobby

Creating a fluid transition between the inside and out, two Moorish-inspired lounges, with a touch of Art Deco, invite new arrivals to immerse themselves in the local culture.

The artful addition of hanging lights and lanterns showcases the reception’s delightful frescoes and mosaics that welcome visitors through the doors of La Mamounia.

La Galerie Mamounia

On either side of the passageway leading to the Salon de Thé par Pierre Hermé and the Spa, six alcoves transport visitors into a world of mystery and exoticism.

These intimate spaces, with their roomy banquette seating are conducive to sharing and conviviality, each telling their own story, rather like a curiosity cabinet inviting visitors to explore the true culture of Morocco.

The Centenary Chandelier

Already known as the Jewel of the Grande Dame, this magnificent masterpiece, installed in the very heart of the hotel, is a treasure to behold from the moment you walk through the doors.

As a bewitching tribute to traditional Berber jewellery, this monumental sculpture of light evokes two necklaces suspended in space.

Le Salon d’Honneur

Historically the hotel's main reception area, this beautiful space decorated in delicate shades of blue has been transformed into a small museum dedicated to La Mamounia.

It houses a "Wall of Fame", a mural installation showcasing the illustrious figures who have stayed at the hotel, as well as a display case exhibiting guest books and drawings.

And, of course, there is the iconic statue of the Dromedary, prominently displayed in the centre of the lounge.

Le Bar, le Salon and l’Esplanade Majorelle

As vibrant tributes to the famous French painter, these spaces are arranged in a harmonious blend of light and ambience.

Sculptural with its glass veneers, the bar has been enhanced by the ingenious introduction of new openings.

Designed to offer unique views over the gardens, the Galerie Majorelle is clad in silky green fabrics that echo the surrounding luxuriant vegetation.

And finally, the Esplanade is laid out around a carob tree - a symbol of protection and long life - planted in honour of the Grande Dame's centenary.

October 2023: a dazzling centenary under the banner of solidarity

Celebrating the Grande Dame's centenary was sure to be a succession of unforgettable moments.

From 4 to 8 October, guests from all over the world shared a magical and memorable experience, steeped in tradition, luxury and the Moroccan art de vivre.

A series of lavish events punctuated this fabulous week. These included the opening ceremony, the unveiling of the Centenary Chandelier, a magical dinner in La Mamounia’s magnificent gardens, and an exhibition retracing the hotel’s fascinating history.

The grand finale was the Centenary Evening, which welcomed some two thousand guests - figures from the world of culture, fashion and business - and offered them a spectacular programme, including an extraordinary musical performance, a ballet of 500 drones dancing in the skies above Marrakesh, fireworks and a glittering ball.

The evening was also a moment of solidarity with the victims of the earthquake that hit the region so severely on 8 September. An appeal for donations helped raised funds for the reconstruction of Marrakesh and the surrounding area.

BAWAB, the iconic mascot of La Mamounia's centenary

To mark its centenary, La Mamounia wanted to shine a spotlight on the exceptional commitment of one of its most emblematic employees: the Doorman or Bawab in Moroccan Arabic.  This mascot embodies the warm and friendly welcome received by all those who cross the doors of our establishment. It reflects a heart and soul that have spanned our hundred-year history and is testimony to a tradition in the art of entertaining that is more alive than ever.
