To conjure up the Gardens of La Mamounia is to journey to the very heart of its legend.

The legend of La Mamounia began in its Gardens in the 18th century, when Prince Al-Mamoun inherited a vast thirteen-hectare estate from his father. He turned it into a venue renowned for its "nzaha” - the magnificent open-air receptions of the great Moroccan tradition.

Two centuries later, La Mamounia hotel was born, and went on to become a legendary palace, the only one in the world to bear a female name.

A haven of peace, tranquillity and beauty, it was prized by the great and the good of high society, who found here the peace and intimacy to which they aspired.

In the heart of nature's bounty

Today, this sweet, dream-like existence still thrives behind the hotel's lofty 12th-century ramparts.

Light and shade, wild groves and perfectly organised avenues of trees, create an abundant and artful disorder.

The best time to discover the Gardens of La Mamounia is perhaps in the morning, when nature awakens to the chirruping sound of birdsong.

Or in the late afternoon, when the sun's rays are waning and the balmy air positively invites you to enjoy a leisurely stroll.

Then is the time to enjoy the simple pleasures of wandering the garden's pathways, discovering its many different species. Soak up the bicentenary olive trees, palm trees, Aleppo pines, oleanders and cacti that keep company with fruit trees such as lime, orange, fig and peach. Marvel at the blossoming jacarandas, roses, Madagascar periwinkle and bougainvillea, as your eyes are drawn to the minaret of the Koutoubia Mosque and, in the distance, the snow-capped peaks of the Atlas Mountains.

On your wanderings through this verdant oasis, you’ll come across tennis courts, the Menzeh par Pierre Hermé tea room for a gourmet stop-off, outdoor games and even a boules pitch.

At the far end of the Gardens, the 1,500 m² vegetable garden jealously guards its tasty treasures, which lend their delicious flavours to the dishes prepared by the Chefs of La Mamounia's four restaurants.

Think crunchy radishes, lettuces, pumpkins, carrots, courgettes and some fifteen different varieties of tomatoes... In short, more than thirty species of vegetables and plants grown with passion and care.

And of course, there are the aromatic herbs, essential ingredients of Moroccan and Mediterranean cuisine, counting among their numbers coriander, mint, basil, oregano, verbena and Madagascan lemongrass, to name but a few.
